Accelerometer Tester

Precision rotary testing platforms featuring automated stepper-motor actuation for accurate multi-axis accelerometer and IMU validation.

Description

Custom Motorised Accelerometer Test Fixture is a high-precision evaluation platform engineered to validate, calibrate, and test onboard MEMS accelerometers, gyroscopes, and inertial measurement units (IMUs). Determining the true accuracy of multi-axis motion sensors requires controlled, highly repeatable changes in orientation relative to gravity. This fixture provides a rigid, vibration-dampened mechanical platform that securely anchors the device under test (DUT) while executing ultra-precise rotational movements.

Developed through the combined manufacturing and engineering capabilities of Columbia Elektronik and Columbia Mekan, this specialised testing solution automates a traditionally manual, error-prone positioning process. Driven by an integrated, programmable digital stepper motor, the fixture rotates the DUT through exact angular steps or continuous motion profiles. This allows your test software to accurately map and record sensor outputs across multiple gravitational axes without human interference or positioning drift.

Key Features & Technical Highlights

  • Precision Stepper Motor Drive: Integrated with a high-torque, high-resolution stepper motor that provides exceptionally accurate angular positioning and micro-stepping capabilities for repeatable multi-axis calibration routines.

  • Rigid DUT Retention System: Features a robust, custom-machined nesting and clamping interface mounted to a perfectly balanced rotary platter, locking the PCB firmly in position to eliminate centrifugal slippage during active rotation.

  • Multi-Axis Mapping Capability: Engineered to smoothly index or spin the assembly across full 360-degree profiles or precise fractional increments, enabling complete operational mapping of X, Y, and Z accelerometer planes.

  • Zero-Binding Cable Architecture: Designed with specialised spatial clearance around the rotary platter to ensure attached signal, data, and power cables maintain a free range of motion without binding, tangling, or straining connections during rotation.

  • Automated ATE Integration: Readily interfaces with external automated test equipment (ATE) and localised factory calibration software via standard motor controllers, matching precise physical motion tracks to real-time data acquisition logs.

Applications

This custom motorised testing platform is ideal for the end-of-line verification and sensor calibration of automotive electronic stability control (ESC) units, industrial vibration monitors, smart logistics trackers, drone navigation systems, and aerospace-grade IMU hardware.
